After
the death of Mao, China decided to open its doors and began
experimenting with a market economy. Since 1949, it had
been operating on a planned economy, which meant that the
government controlled everything having to do with money
and trade, including exchange rates, pricing, investments
and finances. As part of the experiment, China started with
four special economic zones (SEZ). This is where the economy
in these cities was free to allow the market to dictate
prices. It was a huge success and was the headway to China's
current astronomical economic growth. Shenzhen was one of
these four economic zones.
Located
in Guangdong province near the coast, Shenzhen was, and
still is, a pioneer in China's new economy. Additionally,
Shenzhen has a myriad of cultural and recreational activities
for the curious foreigner. This includes the China Folk
Culture Villages, Xiaomeisha Beach Resort, Wild Animal Zoo
- Safari Park Shenzhen and more. It is definitely worth
a look if you are considering doing business in China.
