A
land of religion, culture and the roof of the world, Tibet
serves as being singular by both being very mystic and the
only place on our list that is not a city, but a province.
Located in Western China, the Tibetan Autonomous Region,
or Xizang in Chinese, is vast in size and lofty in its elevation.
Lhasa is Tibet's capital.
Lhasa
is often referred to as the "City of the Sun."
In Tibetan, the name Lhasa means "The Land of the Gods"
or "Holy Place." The atmosphere is not so much
religious as it is spiritual and serving a higher purpose.
Lhasa sits 12,000 feet above sea level and is the highest
city in the world. Resting in the bosom of beautiful, green
mountain ranges, Lhasa is held up above the clouds and is
bathed in the sun, only adding to its spirituality.
In
addition to your regular visa to China, you must have special
permission to travel into Lhasa and other cities of Tibet.
You must arrange for this ahead of time. Additionally, if
you happen to be in China at the time, you can go to Kunming,
which is the gateway to Tibet and arrange to have a tour
and special permission there.
