Chinese Novels

China has its share of well-known novels and stories and here are some of the most famous.

The Monkey King - Known to the Chinese as "Journey to West." Based on a true story of a famous Chinese monk, Xuan Zang (602-664) journeys to India to find the Buddhist holy book. The story is "spiced up" with allegory by use of Chinese fables, fairy tables, legends, superstitions, popular beliefs, monster stories mixed with tidbits from the Taoist and Buddhist religions.

Dream of the Red Chamber - A young girl who's mother dies is taken in, she falls in love with the son who lives there.

Peony Pavilion - A young girl falls in love with a man in her dreams, dies of a broken heart and is resurrected when it turns out he actually exists and visits her grave.

Tale of Water Margin - One of the four great classics, this is a series of stories about a group of heroes. Persecuted by corrupt and unjust civil officials, they resolve to fight back in the name of justice.

Romance of Three Kingdoms - Not only is this novel popular in China, but throughout all of Asia. Taking place in the Three Kingdoms Period of China, this novel covers over one hundred years.
